Patient: 65 year old male diabetes patient with an infected foot.
During the lockdown this diabetic patient required hospital care for infection on his left foot. This patient was turned away from 3 hospitals, 2 of which were government hospitals, and a third (private) hospital told him that he would have to pay Rs. 15,000 for the treatment. He then contacted us and we got him admitted to a private hospital which was empanelled with the SAST government health insurance scheme. Unfortunately the patient’s leg was amputated just above the ankle, the cost was borne entirely by the government insurance scheme.
Patient: 33 year old male patient diagnosed with an intracranial lesion (abscess)
This patient presented with a recurring acute headaches, fever, multiple episodes of vomiting, unfortunately he did not contact us. He went through three private hospitals, the hospital where he spent the maximum time – 23 days, performed a decompressive hemicraniectomy + abscess drainage. The patient was charged more than Rs. 400,000 by this hospital – this is a situation which poor people should not have to go through. After the surgery we he was discharged with a poor prognosis and Anahat helped to move him to a government hospital where he was not charged for his stay – this patient was not eligible for the government insurance scheme, but the state government was able to help him.
